VELscope - Oral Cancer Screening
One person dies from Oral Cancer nearly every hour of every day, but the good news is….early detection with VELscope could save your life
The death rate for oral cancer is higher than that of cervical cancer, Hodgkins lymphoma, laryngeal cancer, endocrine system cancers and melanoma. As seen on “The Doctors,” locally on Khou TV, Channel 11, Monday through Friday at 3:00 PM or go to www.YouTube.com.
Human Papilloma virus (HPV), the sexually transmitted infection commonly associated with 95% of cervical cancers has been linked to oral cancer. HPV has caused an increase of cancer cases in young, non-smoking adults, that until recently had a low incidence of oral cancer.
VELscope is new technology that facilitates Dr. Perkins in detecting oral lesions early. If cancerous and pre-cancerous lesions are detected in the beginning stages there is a greater chance of successful prevention, treatment and recovery. This procedure is painless, takes only minutes and gives Dr. Dr. Perkins a clear, up-close look at the condition of the patient’s mouth.

• Greater Risk after age 35
• Tobacco Use
• Frequent alcohol use
• Prolonged exposure to sunlight (lip cancer)
• A diet low in fruits and vegetables
• The sexually transmitted HPV
That said, approximately 25% of oral cancer cases have no known risk factors. It’s better to be safe and informed by having Dr. Perkins perform an Oral Cancer screening with VELscope at least once a year, or if an oral lesion becomes visible at any time.
